Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers

The AHA’s BLS Course is designed for healthcare professionals and other personnel who need to know how to perform CPR and other basic cardiovascular life support skills in a wide variety of in-facility and pre-hospital settings.

What does this course teach?

  • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
  • The AHA Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • Important early use of an AED
  • Effective ventilation using a barrier device
  • Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants

A 62-page A4 BLS Provider student manual is provided to each participant for review before, during and after the course. For successful completion of the course, participants will be expected to demonstrate proficiency in CPR and AED use during the skills evaluation and obtain a score of at least 84% in the final written evaluation.

10 CEU test points plus 1 ethics point.

The CPR for EVERYONE course is designed to teach the techniques of CPR and choking in adults, children, and infants, and the use of the AED to lay rescuers, particularly those who are expected to respond to emergencies in their occupation or workplace. The course is ideal for security personnel, law enforcement officers, firefighters, teachers, lifeguards, swimming coaches, health and fitness staff, corporate and retail employees and other lay responders.

The course provides hands-on practice in the skills of CPR and choking for adults, children and infants, including the use of barrier devices and pocket masks, and how to activate the emergency services. A 20-page colour manual will be provided to each participant for review before, during and after the course.

The student will be required to pass a 15-question multiple choice test and successfully pass three skills tests before receiving a numbered Resuscitation Council of Southern Africa certificate of competence in CPR, choking and AED.
